Bells and Boas! The Sisters With a Twist (Canberra, Australia) always gather at the Carillon on Canberra's Aspen Island to share great food and celebrate their chapter's birthday. Aspen Island provides a beautiful venue for these lovely ladies, and it's quite a sight to see when it's covered with red and purple! Chapterette Cheryl had attained "The Age" recently, so of course a magnificent Reduation was in order: she was presented with a large red hat and boa, while the chapter gave her a rousing kazoo serenade.

The Sisters were joined by local reporter Ping Lo, a friendly young woman who had heard about the Hatters from an online community forum. Ping really enjoyed getting into the spirit of Hatting: in fact, in an email after the gathering, she commented that it was a difficult job to edit the event into a story, because there was so much laughter throughout the tape!

The weather was gorgeous, and as dusk approached, the ladies were treated a beautiful carillon recital; they spent the rest of evening chatting away to the sound of the beautiful bells ringing out across lake Burley Griffin.

Meet Annie When they were celebrating with the Red Hatters at the Glam on the Grand in Grand Rapids, EQM Sue Ellen and Lady Bug Debra Granich were delighted to meet Cheryl Fiesbeck of the Red Garter Girls (Hope, Indiana, United States). She told them about her delightful "traveling companion," Annie. Says Cheryl, "Annie is fifty (and always will be!) She is witty, sweet, charming, and sometimes a little mischievous...She doesn't travel without me!"

Sparkle in Hawaii! Jo Ann Silva, QueenShebaTx of the El Paso Red Hat Border Babes (El Paso, Texas, United States) couldn't wait to tell her sisters on the Queen Mother Board about her own "scarlet sparkle!"

Jo Ann spent a week in Hawaii during the month of September; one day, she drove to the north shore of Maui, to have lunch at Mama's Fishhouse, in Paia. As she was leaving, she stopped to take a picture of the beautiful site. As she turned around for a last peek, she looked down, and noticed something interesting. Another visitor was wearing terrific shoes: red clogs with Red Hat charms! Jo Ann asked the woman with the red shoes if she was a Red Hatter, and she giggled yes. Jo Ann says, "She stated, if I remember correctly, she was from Oregon, and I told her I was from Texas. We giggled at how we met, small world, and Red Hatters rock, they are everywhere! So ALHOA to my new Red Hat friend, even though I don't know her name! I hope she had safe travel back home."

Tea and Tours The Daft Old Bats (Bedford, Bedfordshire, England), the Fiery Fascinators (Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, England), and other chapters from the surrounding area converged on Trumpington Park and Ride to board an open-topped bus for an entire day of fun! With the Hatters aboard, the colorful open-topped bus trundled on its way with the commentator trying hard to be heard above the noise that the excited women were creating. Many passersby were delighted by the sight of a bus full of women swathed in red and purple. The tour included sites in Cambridge, the American Cemetery, and Silver Street; as the women stopped for lunch, they couldn't resist hosting an impromptu photo session!

For lunch, they were welcomed into a grand room by a gracious butler, and were delighted to discover that the red was decorated in...red! And what a meal awaited them: prawn cocktails, hot and cold dishes, salads and puddings, and soft drinks and coffee. For those who felt up to it there was a bar with wine for sale - and a fair number of Red Hatters availed themselves of this facility!

10 Years of Fun Hatters from Portland, Oregon, United States recently hosted to the 6th annual Pacific NW FunVention. The tradition was started by Queen Gretchen Gross of Vancouver, Washington, in 2003. The annual tradition continued this year in Portland, Oregon, and was attended by 380 Red Hatters from British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California, and as far away as Texas, Illinois and Toronto! The Hatters in attendance remembered that 2008 is the 10th birthday year of the Red Hat Society, and had a great idea—why not make a special 10th RHS Birthday picture for the attendees of the FunVention? Just look at all those magnificent Hatters!
