These Red Hatters already HAD heart! The Hoity Toity Red Hat Mamas (Lewisville/Flower Mound, Texas) found a way to wear their best bling, shop ‘til they dropped, and do some good – all at once. This will be the third year that they will co-sponsor a “Go Red for Women Day” with their local mall. (They were ahead of the curve!) They merely show up on this special day, wearing their finery, to stroll the mall handing out red balloons, little red dress pins (from the AHA) and important information on the symptoms of heart disease. Queen Linda Ward (also known as Mistress of Mischief and a triple bypass survivor herself) relates that the mall has graciously provided them with prizes and a stage to hold contests for the Red Hatters at this event. Last year over 300 Red Hatters showed up for their annual stroll (and – no doubt – a bit of the RHS official sport - shopping).
Wearing a red hat in an emergency? Queen Susan Barrington (Royal Order of Bad Girls – Orlando, Florida), an emergency room nurse, has lost her hair, after undergoing chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. But she’s still enjoying her work, helping others. She says, “…while most of the time I wear a wig, when my scalp is tender, you will see me taking care of patients proudly wearing a Red Hat. It is my badge of courage and hope.”
And just this week, Susan sent this wonderful news: “God has been good to me and my Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma is gone. I went through my last round of chemo so now I can start to get my strength back and my hair can grow back.I have worn my red hat proudly to doctors appointments, chemo treatments, and out in public. People have recognized and given me praise for wearing it. My family and Red Hat sisters have been a strong source of encouragement and I thank God for them and the Society that has empowered women to be themselves.”
Old Bag of Nails and a Bug Museum? The Shady Ladies (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) always have fun on their outings, according to Queen Debbie Grykiewicz. Recently they enjoyed lunch at a rather oddly-named restaurant (Old Bag of Nails) followed by a visit to the local Bug Museum, where they nearly got snagged by a giant spider!

Queen receives mens socks and beef jerky! When Queen Nancy Harbison (Red Hat Surprises – Surprise, Arizona) planned a holiday lunch in her home, she suggested that each chapterette bring a wrapped $10 gift to exchange with other members. They dutifully did so. After lunch, they insisted that she be the first to open a gift. She was puzzled to discover men’s socks, beef jerky, hand sanitizer, and candy. Her chapterettes laughingly explained that every package contained the same thing. They had decided that, rather than exchange gifts that none of them really needed, they would send gifts to Queen Nancy’s son in the military and his fellow troops. Says Nancy, “…so several boxes are now on their way to an outpost in eastern Afghanistan, courtesy of a group of Red Hat ladies who know the true spirit of Christmas giving. What a wonderful organization that has brought me thoughtful and giving friends like these!”

Wrapping a sister in love That’s what the Napa Valley (California) Red Hat Mamas did when they made a “prayer shawl” for chapterette Marty Howell, who has been fighting illness this past year. In their “stitch and bitch” group they made red squares with each member’s initials and hearts, interspersed with purple squares. Now Marty can feel their care whenever she wraps the shawl around her.
