RED HATS ARE FLYING IN SAN DIEGO THIS WEEKEND
(San Diego, California, August 2003) ---
Get ready for the purple and red invasion. More than 100 members of the Red Hat Society will dress in red hats and purple outfits to celebrate Southern California's first annual regional convention in Hotel Circle.
"The first national Red Hat Society convention was held two years ago in Chicago and attracted several hundred people," says convention organizer and Queen Mother Suni Jordan of Sassy Red Hatters in Santee, which started 3 1/2 years ago and now boasts 70 members. "We thought that if the convention could nearly triple in size last year to 2,000, surely our convention will grow."
Suni is one of 300,000 women over the age of 50 in pursuit of fun and frivolity. The Red Hat Society has attracted more than 16,000 chapters worldwide who have had countless stories written about their outings in national publications including the New York Times and Boston Globe newspapers and Women's Day and Romantic Homes magazines.
The "unorganized" weekend begins Friday, Aug. 15 at Town and Country Hotel Resort and Convention Center with a pajama party, talent show and Elvis sighting. "Saturday is the 26th anniversary of the passing of the King--how could we not celebrate his passing?" said Jordan. When asked if such a celebration was a San Diego thing, Jordan replied, "Life is a sassy Red Hat thing."
Saturday begins with a group breakfast, followed by an afternoon High Tea, hat making session with Diana Cavagnaro of San Diego-based hat-maker Ahead Inc. and later dinner with Red Hat Society founder and Exalted Queen Mother Sue Ellen Cooper. The weekend of activities wraps up on Sunday with breakfast followed by picture snapping, hugs and exchanging of Red Hatters phone numbers.
The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and elan more than three years ago. Members believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.
